Die Erforschung der kohärenten Synchrotronstrahlung (CSR) ist ein Schwerpunkt des Helmholtz-Programms "Materie und Technologien" am KIT. Um die CSR Emission präzise beobachten zu können, werden THz-Detektorsysteme benötigt, die das Photonensignal in elektrische Impulse mit einer Zeitauflösung im Pikosekundenbereich umwandeln. Die kontinuierliche Messung der Elektronenpakte der CSR hat sich als unverzichtbares Werkzeug für die Speicherringdiagnostik und die Entwicklung neuer Teilchenbeschleiniger erwiesen. Am IPE wurden wurden hierzu zwei Systeme entwickelt. KALYPSO ist eine Hochgeschwindigkeitszeilenkamera für elektro-optische Analysen, KAPTURE ein Abtastsystem mit Picosekundenauflösung.

Technologie

Leistungsfähige Instrumente zur Elektronenstrahldiagnose sind komplex und benötigen Hightech Komponenten: Sensoren, Front-end-ASIC, HF-Elektronik für THz-Signale, Ausbau- und Verbindungtechnik für die Integration der elektronischen Bauteile und eine heterogene Datenerfassung für kontinuierlichen Datendurchsatz von mehreren Gigabyte pro Sekunde. Diese Bausteine sind im Folgenden kurz vorgestellt.

Sensoren

Für die optimale Anpassung der Strahldiagnostik mit KALYPSO an die Experiment-spezifischen Anforderungen ist ist es notwendig die Spektralempfindlichkeit, die räumliche Auflösung und das Sichtfeld des Sensors entsprechend zu wählen. Hierzu wurde ein modulares System von Silizium-Liniensensoren mit 512 bis zu 2048 Pixeln und Pixelgrößen zwischen 25 und 45 µm entworfen und produziert. Die Photonendurchlässigkeit in den Halbleiter wurde durch einen Anti-Reflexionsbeschichtungs- (ARC) Back-End-Prozess optimiert. Diese Schicht wurde für einen breiten Spektralbereich von 320 nm bis 1050 nm optimiert. Abbildung 1 zeigt die Sensoren, die in zahlreichen Synchrotrons im In- und Ausland im Einsatz sind.

In der neuen Version des KALYPSO-Systems gibt es die Möglichkeit, den Spektralempfindlichkeitsbereich bis zu 5 µm durch PbS- und PbSe-Linienarrays zu erweitern. Parallel dazu haben wir ein neuartigen ultraschnellen Line-Array entwickelt, das auf der Trench-Isolated Low-Gain Avalanche Detector (TI-LGAD)-Technologie basiert. Dieser Sensor wurde so konzipiert, dass er kontinuierlich mehrere Hundertmillionen Bildern pro Sekunde mit intrinsischer Signalverstärkung aufnehmen kann. Der schematische Aufbau des TI-LGAD Sensors ist in Abbildung 2 dargestellt. Die neue Sensortechnologie ist ideal für die transversale Komponente in der Strahldiagnostik geeignet, wo Integrationszeiten von ca. 3 ns benötigt werden. Hiermit kann die Analyse auch auf einen Multi-Bunch-Betriebsmodus ausgeweitet werden.

Front-End-Auslese-ASICs

Zur Auslese der Sensorsignale optimierte analoge Signalverarbeitungsstufen benötigt, sogenannte ASICs. Das Blockdiagramm der ASICs ist in Abbildung 3 dargestellt, er verfügt über 128 parallele Auslesekanäle und in jedem Kanal: 1) einen volldifferentiellen ladungsempfindlichen Folded-Cascode-Verstärker mit drei programmierbaren Verstärkungen, 2) eine differentielle korrelierte Doppelabtastung (correlated-double-sampling), um das Rausch zu reduzieren, 3) eine Abtast- und Halteglied, gefolgt von einem analogen Speicher. Anschließend werden 8 Kanäle zusammengefasst, gemultiplext und durch integrierte schnelle Mehrkanal-ADCs digitalisiert. Es wurden drei ASICs in UMC- 110 nm CMOS-Technologie entwickelt, Gotthard Version 1.6, Gotthard-HR (Proto) und die endgültige Version der Gotthard-HR-Vers. 2. Der Auslese-Chip ist mit verschiedenen Sensortechnologien (Si und InGaAs, InP) kompatibel und arbeitet über 10 MHz Framerate bei voller Detektorbelegung. Sensorbaukasten und Auslese-Chip machen KALYPSO zu einem idealen Detektorsystem für eine Vielzahl von Anwendungen. Das Messsystem zeichnet sich aus durch die ein sehr geringes Rauschen und die hohe Bildwiederholrate. Der endgültige Chip ist in Abbildung 4 dargestellt.

Ultrabreitbandige analoge HF-Front-End-Elektronik für THz-Sensoren

Die KArlsruhe Pulse Taking and Ultrafast Readout Electronics (KAPTURE) ist ein breitbandiges (DC - 60 GHz) und Auslesesystem für THz-Detektor, das für die Abtastung von ultrakurzen Impulsen ausgelegt ist. Als Signalquelle kommen sowohl klassischen- als auch kryogenen THz-Sensoren in Frage. Das THz-Signal wird über breitbandige Verbindungen in einer Track-and-Hold-Einheit und einem 12-Bit-Analog-Digital-Wandler mit bis zu 2 GS/s digitalisiert. KAPTURE bietet bis zu 8 parallele Abtastkanäle mit programmierbaren Abtastzeitpunkten, die in jeweils 3 ps-Schritten eingestellt werden können. Dies ermöglicht eine hochaufgelöste Abtastung eines schnellen Pulses. Mit dieser nicht äquidistanten Abtastung wird eine theoretische Peakrate von bis zu 330 GSa/s erreicht. Die rauscharme Signalverarbeitung erlaubt es, den Zeitpunkt der Pulse mit Pikosekundenauflösung und die Pulsamplitude mit einer Auflösung im mV-Bereich zu messen. Alle Pulse werden in Echtzeit erfasst, rekonstruiert stehen zur weiteren Prozessierung, z.B. mit GPUs zur Verfügung. Das Erfassungssystem KAPTURE ist in Abbildung 5 dargestellt. Es realisiert einen speichereffizienten Ansatz, der optimiert ist, um sämtliche Elektronenpakete eines Speicherringes kontinuierlich vermessen zu können.

Aufbau- und Verbindungstechnik mit höchster Integrationsdichte

Das KALYPSO-Detektorsystem basiert auf der Multichip-Module (MCM)-Technologie. Die MCM-Technologie ist im Grunde genommen eine Erweiterung von hybriden Mikroschaltkreisen, die sich durch einen höhere Integrationdichte und eine verbesserte elektrische Leistung auszeichnen. Abbildung 6 zeigt die KALYPSO-Zeilenkamera mit 512 Pixeln, Pixelabstand von 25µm. Der Siliziumsensor wurde für eine spektrale Empfindlichkeit bei 800 nm optimiert. Der Zeilensensor ist mit vier Auslese-ASICs durch einen Wedge-to-Wedge-Drahtbonding-Prozess mit 25 µm Aluminiumdraht verbunden.

Heterogene Datenerfassung und Datenverarbeitung

Sowohl KAPTURE als auch KALYPSO erzeugen große Datenmengen mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabyte pro Sekunde. Um dieser so genannten "Big Data"-Herausforderung gerecht zu werden, wurde eine heterogene FPGA-GPU-basierte Prozessierungsinfrastruktur entwickelt. Um den Echtzeitanforderungen gerecht zu werden, werden die Daten direkt vom FPGA in den GPU-Speicher übertragen, wobei CPU und CPU-Speicher durch Ad-hoc-DMA (Direct Memory Access) umgangen werden. Um sowohl dem hohen Datendurchsatz als auch der schnellen Datenverarbeitung gerecht zu werden, wurde ein neuartiges Auslesesystem entwickelt, das auf der PCIe-Generation 4 basiert. Die Karte verwendet einen ZYNQ UltraScale+ von Xilinx, das einen 64-Bit-Quadcore-ARM-Prozessor mit bis zu 1,5 GHz und einen Dual-Core-ARM mit bis zu 600 MHz für das Echtzeitbetriebssystem (RTOS) enthält. Der ZYNQ ist zudem mit einem großen FPGA-Baustein ausgestattet. Die in Abbildung 7 dargestellte Auslesekarte ist mit zwei verschiedenen Systemspeichern ausgestattet: einem großen DDR4-SODIMM-Speicher, der an die Prozessorsysteme (PS) angeschlossen ist, und einem 4-Gb-DDR4-Speicher, der an die programmierbare Logik (PL) angeschlossen ist. Eine optische Vollduplex-FireFly-Datenverbindung, die im Vollduplex-Modus mit bis zu 330 Gb/s arbeitet, ist vorgesehen, um die von KAPTURE oder KALYPSO erzeugten Daten direkt an nachfolgenden Einheiten zu übertragen.

Das Auslesesystem ist eine ideale Plattform für die Realisierung von maschinellem Lernen auf FPGAs unter Verwendung der DPU-Technologie (Deep Learning Processor Unit). Die Kombination der Strahldiagnose-Systeme KAPTURE und KALYPSO mit einer Echtzeit-Datenverarbeitung und künstlicher Intelligenz wird eine neuartige Lösung für die Entwicklung autonomer Beschleuniger eröffnen. Darüberhinaus lassen sich die Messsysteme durch einen in das FPGA eingebetteten EPICS oder TANGO-Server direkt in Kontroll- und Monitoringsysteme integrieren.

Die Entwicklung von Instrumenten für die Strahldiagnose ist nur möglich, wenn man die Grenzen der Auflösung von Sensor, analoger und digitaler Datenverarbeitung und Aufbau- und Verbindungstechnik auslotet. In einem internationalen und interdisziplinären Team entwickeln wir mit unseren Partnern Lösung für ein besseres Verständnis der Effekte in Teilchenbeschleunigern. Das Themenfeld ist ideal, um die im Studium gewonnenen Kenntnisse in der Praxis umzusetzen. Wir bieten jederzeit Praktika, Bachelor- und Masterarbeiten sowie Promotionsthemen an.
